Just over six weeks ago Nat Russell and partner Rob Doney started working on the slender brick-walled and concrete-floored restaurant located at 125 W. 1st St in Sanford. Live blues recordings emanate soulfully from the kitchen along with an industrious hum and homey aromas.

Jeanine Taylor will fete the granddame in grand style with sweet tea toasts, collards and cornbread, remarks and merry-making on Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. at the gallery.

The not-too-hot early humidity surrounded us freshly on 1st Street last Wednesday morning as chance would favor a spontaneous meeting (by way of gracious gallery manager MK Shaw) between Lois Simbach and myself. The previous evening’s rain evaporated effervescently in the morning air while we chatted on the sleepy sidewalk and the village came to life around us.
