Another shooting death in Sanford; Police seek clues from the public

Sanford Police are investigating a shooting death that took place in front of Mama Coot’s bar in Goldsboro around 2:45 a.m. Saturday.

Derek Williams, 28, of Sanford and Georgetown, was shot-to-death outside of the local bar at 1013 Historic Goldsboro Blvd., only two blocks from the Sanford Police Department.

City pays Uber, raises cost for ambulance rides

At Monday’s City Commission meeting, the commissioners voted to pay for over $83,000 in Uber rides after the end of their two-year pilot project with the ride-share company.

The Uber pilot project between the company and the cities of Sanford, Longwood, Lake Mary, Altamonte Springs and Maitland ended July 5 after two years.

Longwood man, 53, killed while walking on train tracks

A Longwood man, 53-year-old Mane Yee, was killed when walking his bicycle in front of an oncoming train Sunday, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

On Sunday morning at about 10:30 a.m., Yee was walking his bike on the tracks near Timocuan Way and Spring Hammock Court in Longwood.

The train was coming in, and the whistle was activated to warn Yee.

DeBary residents worry flooding will continue if changes aren’t made

In the City of DeBary, residents have been concerned with flooding for decades and feel that their city government has been brushing them off.

The problem has become so great for some that a website, DeBaryFlooding.com, was created by a local, Alan Goulet, who has lived in the city since the 1990s.

Female Seminole County inmates learn to garden

Seminole County inmates learn about gardening.

Several times per year, an innovative program by the University of Florida, in partnership with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, helps to teach female inmates how to garden.

The hope, according to program coordinator Hannah Wooten, is that it’ll make them more marketable to jobs once they’re released from jail. And it doesn’t hurt to be more self-sufficient, she said.

Seminole County prepares for possible hurricanes

With the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Irma approaching on Sept. 11, there are currently no hurricanes slated to hit Central Florida as of this weekend. But Seminole County is ready, preferring a ‘better safe than sorry’ approach.

In a press release, they outlined a long, comprehensive list of things they had improved since Irma, in preparation for any future hurricanes.

A donation from nonprofit Jeunesse Kids has resulted in a new STEM center at the Early Learning Center on Bay Avenue, which officially held its open house Wednesday morning.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and is considered a vital part of education at all levels.

New development offers small neighborhood near downtown

New homes on 14th Street are part of Cypress Homes' mission to do things differently in Sanford.

Cypress Homes, a company comprised of just two homebuilders, is angling at finishing four new homes on 14th Street near downtown by the end of November, as part of their mission to do things a little differently in terms of home-building in Sanford.

And they’ve got other projects in the pipeline, too, say partners David Ferri and Matt Patterson.
