Local Civil Air Patrol unit will hold open house to celebrate 75th anniversary

The Seminole Composite Squadron, local unit of the Civil Air Patrol, is hosting an open house from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 30 at the StarPort FBO, 100 StarPort Avenue, Sanford.
According to Major Regenna Kistner, squadron commander, the entire community is welcome to attend and learn more about CAP.

The Sanford Herald asked District 3 candidates Patrick Austin and Steve DellaSala to answer several questions regarding their run for office and the City of Sanford. The District 3 election will take place Aug. 30 and only those living in District 3 may vote. Austin and DellaSala are running to replace Commissioner Randy Jones, who decided not to run for reelection.

Performer injured in shooting at The Barn

Police are still searching for a shooter that opened fire in the parking lot of The Barn early Monday morning, injuring a man who had performed at the bar earlier.
The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. when a member of the band Bezz Believe exited the bar. The performer, Dezje Williams, 25, was shot several times in the parking lot.

Driver damages front of SportsClips in hit-and-run

Police arrested a 20-year-old man Thursday after they said he slammed into the front of a SportsClips with his car, backed up and attempted to drive off.
Police said around 11:15 a.m. employees of the store witnessed the man approach the store on W.P. Ball Boulevard. Employees said the man attempted to park, but jumped the curb, slamming into the front of the building.

Geneva, Fla. native serves aboard a U.S. Navy Ballistic Missile Submarine

Fireman Recruit Maxwell Moothart, a machinist's mate (auxiliary) and an Geneva native who graduated from Oviedo High School in 2012, is serving in the U.S. Navy as part of a crew working aboard one of the world’s most advanced ballistic missile submarines, the USS Maine. The Bangor-based boat is just one of 14 Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines.

Fire Academy begins September 7

The nine week course will provide both hands-on and classroom activities to give participants a first-hand look of the training and skills the Seminole County EMS/Fire/Rescue Division needs to respond to emergencies every day.
