On Monday, the Florida League announced the Week 5 Award Winners _ Tanner May (top photo) of the Leesburg Lightning as Player of the Week, on the strength of the game shown in which he also had a game-winning, walk-off 3-run home run and went 7-for-17 _ a .412 average _ with four runs scored, a double, two home runs and drove in 10 runs, and JP Williams (above) of the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs as Pitcher of the Week for games played from June 25-through-July 1.

Florida Dairy Farmers Class 8A Player of the Year Ashley Worrell (top with Winter Springs High School and East All-Stars Head Coach Mark Huaman) was chosen the MVP for the East Squad at the 29th Annual FACA Softball All Star Classic at Florida Southern College in Lakeland earlier last month. Also on the East Team (above) were Kathryn Sutton from Oviedo High and Emily Zientek, Ashley Zientek and Suehellen Lecaros from Huaman’s Winter Springs Bears nine. The honor is just the latest for Worrell, a Rollins College signee, who also led Hagerty High to the Class 8A State Title with a 22-2 record, posting a 1.11 ERA in 157 innings with 119 strikeouts.
