Winter Springs police shot a man Sunday after they said he attacked a teenage girl and lunged at police with a knife.
Police said the incident began at the Casa Park Villas around 4:25 p.m. when a girl reported a man had attacked her while she was walking her dog. The girl told police he tried to pull down her pants. She was able to get away, run home and call police.
Police said the suspect lived in the same neighborhood and when they approached him at his home he pulled a knife inside of a sheath. When he tried to lunge at the officers one deployed his taser. A second officer fired shots, hitting the man.
The officer was identified as Capt. Pat Donovan, an officer with 19 years of experience. He has since been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Jeffrey Alan Worley, 25, of Casa Park Circle, was charged with first-degree attempted homicide, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence and battery.
He was listed in stable but critical condition after undergoing surgery at the Orlando Regional Medical Center and police issued a warrant for his arrest Monday.
Worley does not have any criminal history in the State of Florida.
