Local woman celebrates 95th birthday

Mrs. Joeweze B. Stephens, a long-time resident of Sanford, FL (Midway) celebrated her 95th birthday with family and friends on Sat., April 30, 2016.   
She turned 95 years of age on Sunday, May 1, 2016. She attended church services at her church, New Zion Primitive Baptist Church in Midway; Elder Robert L. Whittaker, Pastor. The church presented her with a beautiful bouquet of flowers and other expressions of love; they said they wanted her to enjoy the beauty and fragrance of the flowers, for which the honoree said she was very grateful.  
The family stated that they thank God every day for Mrs. Joeweze and pray for continued blessings on her life. The family sends out a special “thank you” to everyone who participated in the birthday card shower and celebration for Mrs. Joeweze B. Stephens.

• Seminole High School Class of 1981 announces their 35th Year Class Reunion to be held in Sanford, Sept. 9-11, 2016, at the Midway Community Center (the old Midway Elementary School), 2253 Jitway Ave., Sanford, with the following itinerary: Fri., Sept. 9, from 6-9 p.m., “Reunion Meet and Greet”; Sat., Sept. 10, from 4-9 p.m., “1981 Class Bash”; and Sun., Sept. 11 at 11 a.m., Worship Service at Morning Glory M.B. Church, 2600 E. SR-46 in Midway; Rev. Jimmie Blake (Class of 1981), Pastor.

• The Sanford Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will observe May Week on May 16-21, 2016, to celebrate their scholarship and service programs in the community with the following events:
Mon., May 16: Economic Development; Janice Hanley, Chairperson.  Event: Career and Business Women Development Workshop, from 6-8 p.m., at Shower Down of Blessings Church, 201 S. Elm Ave.; Sanford; Rev. Timothy Hudson, Host Pastor. Kourtney Coleman, Career Performance & Impact Strategist, will present information on women learning their professional and personal value naturally to build a more fulfilling life, including how to grow your relationships and excel in your career while creating work/life harmony.
Wed., May 18: Political Awareness Involvement; Rosalie Cook, Chairperson.  Event: Why the Community Should be Involved in the Political Process Workshop, at the Seminole County Library, 150 N. Palmetto Ave., Sanford, from 4:30-5:30 p.m.  Guest Speaker LaVonne Grayson, President of the Seminole County League of Women Voters, will present information on political awareness and political voting processes.
Thurs., May 19: International Awareness and Involvement; Gracia Miller, Chairperson.  Event: “Delta Sigma Theta Abroad”.  Come “travel” with the Delta’s and learn about their services abroad, at the Seminole County Library, 215 N. Oxford Rd. in Casselberry, from 6-7 p.m.
Fri., May 20:  Educational Development; Ella Robinson, Chairperson.  Event: Dr. Jeanne L. Noble GEMS Institute, Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy and Scholarship Awards Banquet at the Patio Grill, 2900 S. Orlando Dr. (US HW/17-92) in Sanford at 7 p.m.  This will be the culminating event of the year for the Chapter’s youth programs; participants will be recognized; and scholarship awards will be presented. Scholarships are presented annually to graduating Seminole County High School seniors who have excelled academically and contributed their talents to the improvement of their community.
Sat., May 21: Physical and Mental Health; Gena Henderson, Project 13 Chairperson.   Event:  Pink Ribbon Tea Talk at the Lake Mary Community Ctr., 140 E. Wilbur Ave., Lake Mary; 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.  The Chapter partners with the only African American breast cancer survivorship organization, Sisters Network of Orlando, to honor breast cancer survivors in Seminole County communities and provide information and resources.
Sat., May 21: Physical and Mental Health; Julia Wright-Brunson, Chairperson.  Event: From Our Heart to Your Heart, from 3-4 p.m., at Sanford Manor Assisted Living Facility, 1704 W. 9th St., Sanford.  Chapter members will distribute gift bags of socks, toiletries, puzzle books, etc., to the residents.
